Why Use Your Digital Camera to Shoot Video?
DIY Wedding Videos and Family Events
What better way to record a family wedding or party? It's so much more relaxed and informal than traditional wedding photography.
Control Background Blur
Unlike camcorders, on your digital camera you can select the depth of field to create the 'mood' of the image using the same technique used in still photography where you adjust the aperture (f-number), so you can have a subject in focus but the rest of the scene out of focus, or the whole scene in focus. See the example on the right.
It's Free!
The latest generation of digital cameras come packed with great video features, capable of shooting amazing video and giving more than acceptable audio quality.
Capture Action
While getting sharp still photographs of fast action requires a DSLR and specialised techniques, anyone can capture great video footage of even the fastest action.
Choice of Lenses
Your choice of lens means you have complete control of the type of shot you want to take. Even the standard kit lens that comes with your camera is fine for shooting the majority of video you might wish to take, and the latest generation of digital cameras are often equipped with digital zoom, which whilst it's not always acceptable for still photography is ideal for video work.
Low Light Capability
Due to the quality of the image sensor, most digital cameras will shoot video at amazingly low light levels, just by making adjustments to your ISO setting, something which you may have done when taking still shots. Whilst a still image may be grainy at high ISO settings, in video it can enhance the feel and mood of the image.
You Can Shoot High Quality Still and Video Images Simultaneously
The vast majority of digital cameras allow a still image to be captured whilst in the middle of a video shoot, which is great when you want to emphasise the video by showing a still shot mid-scene, for example when taking a wedding video, including a still of the bride and groom in your finished video.
The Bottom Line
In our view, the video capability of digital cameras represents nothing short of a revolution. A new generation of still photographers will embrace this extra feature to shoot family, friends, weddings and holidays as well as art and commercial video.
What You Will Learn

Just a quick note to say a big ‘Thank you' to both Dave and yourself for a really great workshop today. The course was just at the right level to give us an insight to what we have to do to create really good quality video shots, it has inspired me to utilise my camera so much more! Many thanks and look forward to the next workshop! Christine Hall

Thanks for the information. It was a great day on Sunday and I am sure that the new course will be very popular and successful. Looking forward to the Low Light Workshop on the 27th. Mike Mirams
.... thank you for a great day at Clumber Park on Saturday. It was really interesting to find that despite having some pretty serious DSLR and System Camera kit in evidence, no-one had really explored the video capabilities of their cameras prior to the course. James Woodcock
