Photography Courses Yorkshire

For this workshop, we’ll explore Kelham Island, one of Sheffield’s most fascinating and photogenic areas. Once the heart of the city’s steel industry, it’s now a thriving creative hub full of contrasts — cobbled streets and converted warehouses, independent cafés and colourful murals, historic bridges and reflections on the River Don. There’s no shortage of textures, tones and stories to photograph.

The Urban Landscapes Workshop includes three parts:

Online Group Training Session – an interactive Zoom presentation held a few days before (usually the Wednesday around 6.00pm). We’ll cover camera settings, composition, and exposure tips to help you create striking urban images. The session is recorded for anyone who can’t attend live or wants a refresher.

In-Person Photowalk – we’ll meet outside the Kelham Island Museum for a fun and relaxed 3½-hour photo walk, starting at 9am. We’ll explore the area’s industrial heritage and modern edge, giving you plenty of opportunities to practise what you’ve learned.

One-to-One Photo Review – after the workshop, you’ll have the chance to send in some of your images for a personal online review and feedback session. A tripod isn’t essential — being able to move freely, crouch low or change your viewpoint will help you capture more creative compositions.

Previous Experience: To get the most from this workshop, you should have attended our Beginner’s Photography Course or be familiar with using Aperture Priority, Exposure Compensation, and ISO.

Please note: Kelham Island’s charm lies in its historic character, which includes uneven ground and cobbled streets. These features make for wonderfully textured and atmospheric photographs, but may not be suitable for everyone. Comfortable footwear is essential, and we’ll take our time exploring at a relaxed pace.

Meet: 9:45am | Approx finish: 2:00pm (flexible time) Join Kate for an incredible photography experience at the spectacular Race The Waves event on Bridlington Beach — a unique vintage motorbike and car race set against the stunning Yorkshire coastline. This is a brilliant opportunity to photograph beautifully restored vintage vehicles, action-packed racing, and the amazing atmosphere created by drivers and riders dressed in authentic vintage clothing.

What We’ll Photograph - We’ll begin on the beach amongst the display vehicles and competitors, giving us time to capture:

Vintage cars and motorbikes up close

Environmental portraits and detail shots

Drivers and riders in vintage dress

Documentary-style images of the event atmosphere

Around 11am, the vehicles parade down the beach towards the race area — another fantastic photographic opportunity with lots of movement and storytelling moments. The racing is scheduled to begin from approximately 11am and continues into the afternoon, giving us the chance to practise:

Action photography

Photographing moving subjects

Panning techniques

Capturing speed and motion

Candid documentary-style photography

Important Information - Please note that this is a live public event and timings may change on the day.We are planning to meet at 9:45am and finish at approximately 2pm, but some flexibility will be needed depending on the event schedule. The event can become very busy, particularly around the vehicle displays. You’ll need to be comfortable either patiently waiting for opportunities or confidently moving around crowds to find the best angles and moments. There will be walking involved throughout the session — likely a couple of miles in total — across the promenade and beach areas.

Recommended Equipment - You’ll ideally need:

A zoom lens for photographing the racing action from a safe distance

A wide-angle or standard lens for vehicle displays, environmental shots, and storytelling images

Experience Level - Skill level 3 - This experience is best suited to photographers who already have some understanding of their camera settings and some experience photographing moving subjects. The day is designed to help you build confidence with:

Panning

Timing and anticipation

Documentary and storytelling photography

Most importantly, it’s a chance to enjoy a truly spectacular event with plenty of support and guidance throughout the session.
