For this workshop, we’ll explore Kelham Island, one of Sheffield’s most fascinating and photogenic areas. Once the heart of the city’s steel industry, it’s now a thriving creative hub full of contrasts — cobbled streets and converted warehouses, independent cafés and colourful murals, historic bridges and reflections on the River Don. There’s no shortage of textures, tones and stories to photograph.

The Urban Landscapes Workshop includes three parts:

Online Group Training Session – an interactive Zoom presentation held a few days before (usually the Wednesday around 6.30pm). We’ll cover camera settings, composition, and exposure tips to help you create striking urban images. The session is recorded for anyone who can’t attend live or wants a refresher.

In-Person Photowalk – we’ll meet outside the Kelham Island Museum for a fun and relaxed 3½-hour photo walk, starting at 9am. We’ll explore the area’s industrial heritage and modern edge, giving you plenty of opportunities to practise what you’ve learned.

One-to-One Photo Review – after the workshop, you’ll have the chance to send in some of your images for a personal online review and feedback session.A tripod isn’t essential — being able to move freely, crouch low or change your viewpoint will help you capture more creative compositions.

Previous Experience:To get the most from this workshop, you should have attended our Beginner’s Photography Course or be familiar with using Aperture Priority, Exposure Compensation, and ISO.

Please note: Kelham Island’s charm lies in its historic character, which includes uneven ground and cobbled streets. These features make for wonderfully textured and atmospheric photographs, but may not be suitable for everyone. Comfortable footwear is essential, and we’ll take our time exploring at a relaxed pace.

Growing in popularity, urban photography takes in architecture, cityscapes, art (including graffiti) and street photography — and Leeds offers endless creative opportunities. Starting at Leeds Dock, the city’s creative waterside village, we’ll make our way towards the city centre, capturing the textures, lines, light and quirkiness the city has to offer along the way. This workshop now includes two ways to take part, making it suitable for a range of experience levels: Follow the guided urban photo walk, learning how to see and compose strong urban images Or opt into an optional Creative Challenge designed to push your creativity a little further (perfect for those who want an extra stretch) Creative challenges may include themes such as working with one colour, minimalist city scenes, light and reflections, one lens / one focal length, or creating a small storytelling image series. Challenges are completely optional and there’s no pressure — you choose what suits you.

Before the workshop

To prepare you, we’ll hold a Zoom presentation a few days before the walk (usually Wednesday around 6.30pm). This session is recorded for anyone who can’t attend live or would like a refresher before the practical day.

On the day

We’ll meet at Leeds Dock for the practical part of the workshop, which lasts around 3.5 hours, starting at 9am.

After the workshop

You’ll have the option to send me a selection of your images from the day and receive a personal one-to-one photo review over Zoom, helping you understand what worked well and how to develop your images further.

Previous experience

To get the most from this workshop, you should have attended our Beginner’s Photography Course or be familiar with using Aperture Priority, Exposure Compensation and ISO.

With a maximum of just four students, you’ll enjoy plenty of individual guidance and time to ask questions. The day runs from 10:30am – 4:00pm at our photography studio in Morley, Leeds, and includes hands-on practice in Churwell’s award-winning urban woodlands – the perfect place to put your new skills into action.

We’ll skip the jargon and explain everything in plain English, helping you finally take control of your camera and get off Auto mode with confidence. This workshop combines relaxed classroom learning with fun practical sessions, and you’ll leave with helpful reference materials to support your continued learning.

• Access involves a 7-minute steep walk over rough terrain

• Photography Skill Level 3 required: comfort with moving subjects and experience using manual or shutter-priority settings
