EQUESTRIAN PHOTOGRAPHY - PAUL SOUTHALL
Equestrian photography or more specifically
shooting action images of horse and rider at eventing evolved after meeting with my
wife. She had been the owner of several ponies and horses since childhood, having five
when we met and with a son competing in horse trials it is fair to say that daily topic
veered to matters of horses.

Having a background and passion of
photographing motor sport the action and atmosphere of a cross country event I
immediately found appealing. Smells, sounds, action and the buzz of an event, although
somewhat different, evokes a similar sense of excitement that is compelling to capture.
Whether out on the course, in the paddock, amongst horse boxes or mingling with the
spectators there is an abundance of images to be shot that tell the story of the day.
Portraits of horses make a great photograph when they are captured in light that will accentuate their muscle and form. A close up shot is equally compelling. Add the rider or owner and another twist to the image is made.
